ARIPIPRAZOLE-INDUCED OCULOGYRIC CRISIS (ACUTE DYSTONIA)

Introduction Aripiprazole is a third generation atypical antipsychotic and dopamine serotonin system stabilizer, effective against positive negative symptoms of schizophrenia. Within the group antipsychotics, aripiprazole shows relatively benign safety profile (e.g. lower metabolic impact, mild effect on cardiovascular parameters), although reported rate extrapyramidal side effects measurable. Oculogyric crisis (OGC) rare movement disorder characterized by prolongued involuntary upward deviation eyes, lasting minutes to hours. In most cases, OCG drug-induced adverse event with acute or tardive onset often attributable functional impairment dopaminergic neurotransmission. Objectives OGC seldom in children young adults during treatment aripiprazole, althouh it commonly used youths. Methods We report case an aripiprazole-induced oculogyric 19 year old girl who diagnosed schizophrenia (paranoid). Results There was complete remission OGC’s following dose reduction, suggesting clinical manifestation dose-dependent phenomenon. Conclusions The present should raise awarness among clinicians for this relevant possible event, that can happen also use aripiprazol, not only typical more antidopaminergic antipsychotics.
